Purpose: In this study we aimed to analyze if correlation can be found between blood flow in maternal and fetal arteries and parameters of respiratory function in pregnant women with different placental localization.

Methods and Materials: Parameters of a blood flow (S/D ratio) in both maternal uterine arteries, umbilical artery and middle cerebral artery of fetuses and parameters of respiratory function (forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, reserve expiratory volume etc.) and also parameters of red blood count (red blood cells and haemoglobin) of 155 pregnant women in I, II and III trimesters of physiological pregnancy (52– with right side, 51– with left side and 52– with bilateral placental location) were analyzed.

Results: It was found, that with progression of pregnancy in cases of right side placental location the relative increase in forced vital capacity with simultaneous decrease in reserve expiratory volume occur. It was accompanied by decrease in parameters of S/D ratio in both uterine and umbilical arteries and increase of parameters of S/D ratio in middle cerebral artery of fetus. At bilateral placental location the changes of blood flow parameters were similar, but gradual decrease in parameters of pulmonary function was observed. At left side location of placenta primary increase of parameters of lung function in II trimester and subsequent decrease – in III trimester were registered. Reduction in respiratory parameters of red blood count of pregnant women was accompanied by haemoglobin decrease and maximal increase of S/D ratio in middle cerebral artery of fetus.

Conclusions: The obtained results demonstrate that the most expressed fluctuations of pulmonary function parameters, fetal blood flow and parameters of red blood count in pregnant women can be seen in the cases of left side location of placenta. The adaptability to hypoxia during III trimester of pregnancy with such location of placenta is minimal.
