    Introduction:

Tonsillectomy and tonsillotomy (TE/TO) belong to the most frequent surgical procedures in ENT and have a significant impact on several dimensions of the patient's quality of life. The aim of this review is to describe the available, valid and reliable disease-specific questionnaires for outcome assessment in TE/TO.

    Methods:

A review of the literature in PubMed was conducted to evaluate reliable and validated patient related outcome assessment instruments for TE/TO. Therefore, studies without patient-reported outcome measures (PROM), studies without detailed information as well as studies in non-English/non-German language were excluded.

    Results:

1964 studies were analysed. Eleven reliable and valid questionnaires which measure the quality of life after TE/TO in general were identified. Six of them are available for adults and children, five exclusively for children. With regard to sleep-disordered breathing seven instruments are validated for children, three questionnaires for adults and one for both age groups. Other outcome parameters like dysphagia, voice, pain, nausea, emesis are evaluated by 13 questionnaires (eight for children, one for adults and four for both age groups).

    Conclusion:

This review presents the currently available, valid and disease-specific instruments to measure different patient-reported outcome parameters in adults and children after TE/TO. Thus, this study will simplify the selection of the appropriate instruments to evaluate the different domains of the patient-reported outcome after TE/TO in further studies.
