    Introduction:

Even mild hearing loss in early childhood can affect the language development and subsequently the overall development of the child. The question arises as to whether a general hearing screening for newborns is sufficient.

    Methods/Results:

The basis of this study were the results of the preschool examination of a total of 1,386 children of the city of Magdeburg. In addition to the prevalence of hearing disorders, the prevalence of transient conductive hearing disorders in preschool age could be demonstrated. The most common form is chronic middle ear effusion. Furthermore, data on the overall development of the child and risk factors for the existing hearing impairment were collected and evaluated.

    Conclusion:

Transient conductive hearing loss are the most common cause of hearing impairment in preschool age. Is a new preschool screening necessary? Is there a general need to treat a chronic middle ear effusion? It is also discussed with which method the hearing test should be performed optimally and what influence the time of the preschool examination has on the test result.
