Aim Examination of treatment effectiveness of regeneration factors (REF) as expanded access for chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps in addition to treatment by current clinical guidelines.

Method Retrospective, controlled case series of 150 full-aged patients (REF-group n = 50, reference group n = 100). Evaluated are patients' subjectively perceived quality of life (SNOT-20 GAV; < 20 to > 70), mucosa score (MSc; 1 – 5), presence of post nasal drip (PND; 0 – 3) and the olfactory function (SSc; 1 – 5) at the time of: preoperative, 3 rd postoperative week (3 POW), 3 rd & 6th postoperative month (3 POM & 6 POM). Means of REF- and reference group were compared between time points of examination. Further, within REF-group an ANOVA was conducted. Aim of the ANOVA was to identify significant differences of treatment success during medical treatment.

Results Preoperatively, both REF- (61.3) and reference group (50.6) perceived moderate complaints by the influence of CRS on their quality of life. Postoperatively, both groups experienced a smaller influence on their quality of life by CRS (3POM 20.9/33.6), whereby the REF-group at 6 POM only stated a minor effect (6 POM 10.4/24.5). PND, SSc and MSc improved after treatment in both groups, here the REF-group showed a higher treatment success at 6 POM than the reference group (PND: 1.2/2.9; SSc: 1.7/2.2; MSc: 1.3/2.9). Further, the detected improvement within the REF-group was highly significant (p < 0,001) for all considered parameters.

Conclusion Additional application of REF for CRS treatment based on current clinical guidelines improved the effectiveness of treatment for dysfunctions of the nasal mucosa.
