Objective Several factors have an impact on a women’s decision to use a specific contraceptive method. The current study evaluates which quality of life parameters are associated with a continuation of the usage of the contraceptive vaginal ring Ornibel®.

Methods One-hundred healthy women that used the contraceptive vaginal ring Ornibel® for at least 6 months participated in a non-interventional retrospective, multi-center study. Quality of life parameters were assessed via a patient questionnaire. Using a Chi-Square linear trend test it was analyzed which parameters are associated with the continuation of the contraceptive method and its recommendation.

Results Most women strongly agreed or agreed that Ornibel® is easy to insert (91%) and that they felt very comfortable or comfortable when using the ring (97%). The continuation of the usage of the ring and a recommendation for the ring were significantly associated with these two parameters (Continuation: easy to insert: p=0.017; feeling comfortable: p=0.001; recommendation: easy to insert: p=0.004; feeling comfortable: p=0.005). In addition, there was a significant association between “ring never or occasionally affected my daily activities” and the continuation of usage of the ring (p=0.027) as well as a recommendation for the ring (p=0.023). No association was found for the parameters “Ring was noticed by my partner during sexual intercourse” and “Ring lost during usage”.

Conclusions The current study reveals that feeling comfortable and easy handling of the ring usage are the major parameters for women to continue the usage of the contraceptive vaginal ring Ornibel® and to recommend this ring.
