Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. There are two main types of strokes, ischemic and hemorrhagic, and both types may arise from a wide range of pathologies. Several factors should help clinicians narrow down the differential diagnosis including detailed history, time course, focused neurological examination, and other relevant past medical and/or family history. In this chapter, common ischemic stroke syndromes and etiologies of ischemic stroke, nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage are discussed as well as atypical presentations and etiologies of both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
