Abstract

Traumatic brain injury initiates several metabolic processes that can exacerbate the injury. Role of temperature in modulating and managing the injured brainis well known. There is evidence that cerebral ischaemia occurs after severe traumatic brain injury and therapy is directed towards the adequate supply of oxygen to meet cerebral metabolic demand, in order to avoid a secondary injury. It is seen that moderate hypothermia not only decreases metabolic rate, but also decreases intracranial pressure. Moderate hypothermia may be induced for more prolonged periods and is relatively safe and feasible therapeutic option in the treatment of selected patients with severe traumatic brain injury.
