Mit der Tiefen Hirnstimulation lässt sich Nervengewebe mit einer sonst kaum erreichbaren räumlichen und zeitlichen Präzision stimulieren. Dabei werden Effekte, die mit einer Latenz von Sekunden oder Minuten nach Beginn der Stimulation einsetzen, unmittelbar der elektrischen Stimulation zugeschrieben, solche im Bereich von Stunden und Tagen der Neuroplastizität und Wirkungen nach Wochen und Monaten der Reorganisation von Netzwerken.

Kernaussagen
  • Die THS ist eine klinisch und wissenschaftlich wichtige und zukunftsweisende Methode in der Neurologie und Psychiatrie.

  • Das Verständnis des Gehirns und die technologische Entwicklung haben einen Stand erreicht, der schnelle Fortschritte bei der THS erwarten lässt.

  • Die THS bietet eine Chance für eine interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit verschiedenster Fachrichtungen.

  • Bei Morbus Parkinson hat die THS bereits einen gesicherten Stellenwert.

  • Bei einigen anderen Krankheiten eröffnen sich durch die THS gerade neue Therapieoptionen.

  • Darüber hinaus sind Indikationen, Zielstrukturen, Technologie und Akzeptanz in der Gesellschaft erst in Ansätzen ausgelotet.
