ABSTRACT

Bullying is defined as a set of aggressive acts with the goal to hurt, humiliate or intimidate another person. The digital revolution has enlarged those possibilities beyond ‚classic’ bullying. Perpetrators may stay anonymous, physical dominance is not necessary, a larger audience can be reached, messages can be saved for an unlimited time and without recall. Cyber-bullying causes serious problems for victims or perpetrators and impairs their physical and psychological health, their social relationshiops and quality of life. Victims may suffer depression, anxiety, PTSD, intense distress, sleep disturbance, self-harming, suicidality and actual suicide. It is important to recognise the co-morbidities as soon as possible and treat accordingly. Effective preventative measures are available but not being used intensely or widely enough. Measures taken against bullying not only prevent (cyber-) bullying but also improve the social climate at school and within families, and facilitate attitudes against bullying while improving quality of life.
