Abstract
The group of neutrophilic dermatoses includes various non-infectious diseases characterised
by an accumulation of neutrophilic granulocytes in the skin. The clinical appearance
of these dermatoses is diverse and ranges from sterile pustules to superficial or
deep tissue infiltration and necrosis. The skin lesions are defined histopathologically
by a diffuse infiltrate of neutrophilic granulocytes without evidence of infection.
Evidence suggests a pathogenetic role of selected proinflammatory cytokines of the
interleukin (IL)-1 cytokine family, leading to sterile neutrophil-rich inflammation
of the skin. The classification of neutrophil dermatoses is histopathologically based
on the cutaneous localisation of neutrophil accumulation. The article provides an
overview of the most important clinical features of neutrophilic dermatoses, their
causes and treatment options.
