Author commentary on Eisuke Nakao et al.
The potentially enhanced detection rate of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with AI was assessed in this randomized controlled trial. A total of 320 high risk patients with ESCC undergoing screening or surveillance esophagogastroduodenoscopy were randomly allocated to AI or control groups. Nonexpert detection rates for ESCC were 47% (with AI) and 45% (control group), with no significant difference. In this study AI appeared not to be of added value for ESCC detection by nonexperts in clinical practice.
