Abstract
Even though forensic psychiatry treats the same patients using the same treatment
methods and the same medications, it differs significantly from general psychiatry
in many respects. In forensic psychiatry, mentally ill criminals are treated with
the goal of reducing their danger to society. Treatment is subject to certain legal
requirements and conditions. We present forensic psychiatry, its fundamental principles
and specific legal aspects, and outline acute drug treatment using two case studies
that reflect the broad spectrum of treatment for mentally ill criminals. It turns
out that forensic psychiatry is quite successful and that particularly schizophrenic
patients who are treated with medication and receive follow-up care have a good prognosis.
