Significance

Platencin was isolated from a new strain of Streptomyces platensis. It has sparked a great deal of interest due to its novel mode of action and impressive antibiotic properties, especially against drug resistant bacterial strains. This synthesis relies upon a radical cyclization (EF) to construct the key bicyclic ring system.
