Significance

The novel tetra-ortho-substituted biphenyl phosphinoimine ligands are synthesized by condensation of the corresponding aldehydes and enantiopure tert-butylsulfinamide, followed by separation of diastereomeric products. A difficult 1,2-addition reaction of arylboronic acids to N-benzylisatin is chosen to evaluate these new ligands via palladium catalysis.
