Significance

Tamiflu® is used as a treatment for influenza as well as to prevent infections. The active drug is the free acid which inhibits the enzymes necessary for viral replication, neuraminidases A and B. The synthesis of Banwell and co-workers starts with the commercial diol A, which is derived from microbial dihydroxylation of bromobenzene.
