Abstract

A case of a fatal cystic astrocytoma which involved the brainstem of a 12 year old girl is reported. Its course encompassed more than 10 years despite the lack of any specific therapy. It presented as aqueductal stenosis and was not diagnosed in life because pneumoencephalography, which had shown no distortion of posterior fossa structures initially, was not repeated when cranial nerve involvement became evident late in her course. While cystic astrocytomas of the cerebellum, and less frequently, of the cerebral hemispheres, are well known to occur in children, only one other report of a cystic astrocytoma of the brainstem has been found.
