Central Monoamine Deficiency in Depressions: Causative or Secondary Phenomenon?^*

Summary

There are indications for a functional deficiency of 5-HT and DA in certain kinds of depression. The question arises if these biochemical disturbances are primary or secondary, whether they contribute to the pathogenesis of the depression or whether they result from it. From research with MA precursors we drew the tentative conclusion that they are presumablely primary and interrelated with the depression in a causal and/or predisposing way.

Zusammenfassung

Es gibt Anhaltspunkte dafür, daß 5-HR und DA in gewissen Typen der Depression nicht voll funktionieren. Es fragt sich, ob diese biochemischen Störungen primär oder sekundär, ob sie Ursache oder Folge der Depression sind. Wissenschaftliche Untersuchung mit MA Vorläufern veranlassen uns vorläufig anzunehmen, daß sie wahrscheinlich primär sind, und mit der Depression in ursächlichem und/oder prädisponierendem Zusammenhang stehen.
