Submucosal Cysts of the Large Bowel: Report of a Case with Clinical Regression

Summary

A case of colonic submucosal cysts suggestive of colitis cystica profunda which has significantly regressed with conservative treatment is presented. The diagnosis of the disease can be made by a deep endoscopic biopsy of the colonic lesions containing the submucosa. An unnecessary cancer operation can be avoided if a biopsy procedure makes a definitive diagnosis of benignancy for the submucosal cysts in this disease. Furthermore, the presented case suggests the possibility of regression in this disease with conservative treatment.

Zusammenfassung

Fallbericht über submuköse Kolonzysten, die an eine Colitis cystica profunda erinnern und die sich unter konservativer Therapie deutlich zurückgebildet haben. Die Diagnose konnte durch eine tiefe endoskopische Biopsie, die Teile der Submukosa umfaßte, gesichert werden. Dadurch ließ sich eine unnötige Operation vermeiden, zumal sich die Zysten unter konservativer Therapie zurückbildeten.
