Survey of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Accidents in Israel, 1973/74

Summary

A nation-wide, anonymous record of endoscopy accidents showed that during 1973, 1470 upper gastrointestinal endoscopies and colonoscopies were performed. There were 3 fatalities (0.2%), 2 cardiovascular and one following an esophageal perforation. There were 2 other non-fatal cardiovascular complications (0.27%, including the fatal cases) and three other non-fatal perforations (0.27% including the fatal case). The overall morbidity being 0.34%. These figures compare unfavorably with other nation-wide series from the USA and Britain. It reflects the variable experience or the large number of examiners and trainees involved and the increasing number of poor-risk and elderly patients being examined.

Zusammenfassung

Eine Umfrage an den nationalen Endoskopiezentren in Israel ergab, daß 1973 insgesamt 1470 endoskopische Untersuchungen des oberen und unteren Verdauungstrakts durchgeführt worden waren. Dabei kam es zu 3 Todesfällen (0,2%;); 2 kardiovaskuläre Komplikationen, eine Perforation, 2 kardiovaskuläre Zwischenfälle und 3 weitere Perforationen verliefen nicht tödlich. Somit konnte eine Morbidität von 0,34% ermittelt werden, Zahlen, die deutlich über denen von anderen Umfragen im Ausland lagen. Sie spiegeln die unterschiedliche Erfahung einer großen Anzahl von Untersuchern sowie die zunehmende Zahl älterer „poor-risk” -Patienten wider.
