Summary

The glycoside gein was isolated from the roots of Geum urbanum L. plants and its characteristics in paper chromatography are given. The enzyme (vicianosidase), which splits gein to eugenol and vicianose, originally called „gease”, was studied in detail (Km = 6,3 • 10–3 M, pH optimum 4,9; optimal temperature 40° C). After infiltration of phenolic compounds into isolated leaves and germinating seedlings of Geum urbanum phenolic glycosides were detected and characterized.
