Summary
During the vegetation period of Papaver somniferum plants sugar and morphine content have been determined in the individual organs in
the main phases of ontogenesis. Quantitative Chromatographie analysis has been employed
for the determination of sugars, morphine has been determined by a polarographic method.
The content of all components studied has been expressed in relative values in per
cent of the dry substance of the drug, on the other hand also in absolute values after
recalculating for the individual organs.
The variations proved in the content of individual sugars and morphine show the importance
of glucose for the biosynthesis of opium alkaloids.
