Summary

Orcein can be separated by Chromatographie methods into 14 N–containing individual compounds.

The structure of the main components has been elucidated by making use of the most modern methods of structural analysis (resonance and electron spectra). The main pigments of orcein can be devided in three groups according to the nature of the chromophoric system: 7–oxyphenoxazon, 7–aminophenoxazon and 7–aminophenoxazin.

Litmus is a mixture of more complex pigments than orcein. Most of the components of litmus are polymeric compounds with 7–oxyphenoxazon chromophores.
