Summary

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Bacterium pyocyaneum) contains proteolytic enzyme systems which act upon and split native human plasma proteins. In some CSF samples and one specimen of pus this action of Pseudomonas aeruginosa enzymes could be identified as an in-vivo effect. In parallel with the bacteriological investigations immunoelectrophoresis was also carried out on the samples. On immunoelectrophoresis the individual plasma proteins showed the same changes as occur in the reaction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with human plasma in-vitro. Thus a deeper insight into the pathogenetic mechanisms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections on the molecular level is provided.
