Summary
Four main topics were discussed.
(1) Tuberculin. Since the 1939 Tuberculin Conference in Copenhagen, a Tuberculin Unit is defined as the activity contained in 1/100,000th ml. of the Standard Old Tuberculin at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute in Frankfurt. However, the methods of determining the units contained in 1 ml. of tuberculin vary widely in different countries. The following problems were discussed: production (strain of M. tuberculosis; culturing; sterilisation and concentration; purification) and quantitative estimation (selection of experimental animals and subjects; sterilisation; preparation; dilution; technique of injection; interpretation of results).
(2) Pertussis immunisation. Methods of testing the efficacy of different sera were discussed. Kendrick's method (1947) of intracerebral injection into mice seems to have found general acceptance. But international standardisation is still far from realisation.
(3) Poliomyelitis vaccination. Tests for ensuring the harmlessness of the Salk vaccine were discussed at length. The exact determination of the immunising effect of a given vaccine, e.g. by comparison with a standard serum, is still in its first stages.
(4) Typhoid vaccines. Although antigenic and biochemical investigations have determineed the basic antigens (O, Vi, H) and their chemical composition and immunological activity, standardisation of the typhoids vaccines has made little progress. There was disagreement especially about the correlation between the various basic antigens and their protective effect. The statistical results of the 1954/55 mass field trials by the W.H.O. in Yugoslavia are awaited for the information that they may give on the antigenicity and effectiveness of different vaccines.
