Significance

Previous synthetic work described the synthesis of a number of mono-haloginated pentiptycenes derived from pentiptycene phenol (2), which in turn was derived from pentiptycene aminophenol (1). However, these strategies did not allow the access of compounds 3-8. The authors of this work have been able to synthesize compounds 3-8 using similar chemistry as in the previous efforts by recognizing the importance of the choice of solvent. The authors also demonstrate a number of cross-couplings of the derived halogenated pentiptycenes.
