Electrooxidation of Alcohols Using an N-Oxyl-Immobilized Silica Gel

Significance

The totally closed system for electrooxidation of alcohols in aqueous media using an N-oxyl-immobilized silica gel 1 was described. N-oxyl-immobilized silica gel 1 and an alcohol were added to an aqueous reaction media (sat. NaHCO3/20 wt% NaBr) in an undivided cell. Two Pt electrodes were immersed into the reaction mixture, and a constant current (30 mA) was supplied for 2.23 h at 0 ˚C. The mixture was filtered, and the silica gel 1 was rinsed for several times with acetone. The organic washings were concentrated in vacuo and the residue was passed through a short column to afford the corresponding carbonyl compound (44-94%, 7 examples).
