Mesoporous Pd/Silica-Carbon-Catalyzed Coupling Reactions

A palladium catalyst (Pd/MSC) supported on an ordered mesoporous silica-carbon nanocomposites (MSC) was applied to the coupling reactions of aryl chlorides in water. Thus, MSC was synthesized via a surfactant templating method from a soluble phenolic resin (prepared from phenol and HCHO) and tetraethylorthosilicate as carbon and silica precursors with triblock copolymer F127. The characterization of Pd/MSC by XRD, TEM, N2 sorption, FT-IR, TG, XPS and H2 chemisorption revealed the highly ordered mesostructure, high surface areas (345 m²g-¹), large pore volumes (0.46 cm³g-¹), uniform pore size (6.3 nm), and high dispersion of palladium nanoparticles (3 nm) in the mesopores.
