Significance

The synthesis of organic nanotube structures with well-defined dimensions is described. Multicomponent bottlebrush copolymers 5 are synthesized, which adopt a cylindrical shape. The alkene side chains are cross-linked via cross-metathesis, and the internal polylactide core is degraded to generate hollow nanotubes. Water-soluble nanotubes can also be generated by varying the nature of the polymeric precursors.
