Significance

Isoindoles are interesting building blocks for the formation of electronic polymers and molecules, and for the competition between the aromatic character of the benzene and the heterocylic ring. Related isobenzothiophene structures have been used to create polymers with low HOMO-LUMO gaps (J. Org. Chem. 1984, 49, 3382). The borylated isoindoles will be useful in the synthesis of new organic conductors and chromophores.
