Significance

Fumonisin B1 is a mycotoxin isolated from the Fusarium verticilliodes. It is fatal to horses and pigs (”moldy corn poisoning") and it is associated with oesophagal cancer and birth defects in humans. Hydrolysis of the two tricarballylic esters in vivo followed by N-palmitoylation gives a compound which is more cytotoxic to HT29 human colon cancer cells than fumonisin B1.
