Significance

A chiral N,N′-dioxide scandium(III) catalyzed enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with ethyl glyoxylate was developed. After careful optimization of ligand structures and reaction conditions, up to 95% ee of the resulting 3-indolyl(hydroxy)acetate products were obtained.
