Significance

In the presence of XantPhos, alkyne-1,4-diols are shown to undergo a ruthenium-catalyzed isomerization leading to 1,4-diketones. Following one-pot Paal-Knorr reactions with organic acids, primary amines, or hydrazine hydrate give rise to the formation of 2,5-disubstituted furans, pyrroles, or 3,6-disubstituted pyridazines, respectively.
