Photochromism in Reverse

Significance

The vast majority of photochromic compounds display behavior wherein the thermodynamic (dark) state is colorless or less colored (high band gap) than the photochemically generated state. This simple system creates well-known spiropyran structures that display the opposite behavior. The compounds are readily prepared and show good reversibility in their photochromic responses.
