The Anti-Amnesic Effects of Codonopsis lanceolata Extract by Ultra-High Pressure and Fermentation Process on Scopolamine-Induced Spatial Memory Impairment in Mice

Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae) has therapeutic applications in traditional medicine for the treatment of lung abscesses. This study was conducted to evaluate potentiation of anti-amnesic effect Codonopsis lanceolata (C. lanceolata) by ultra-high pressure and fermentation process. In vivo tests, Morris water maze test and passive avoidance test the cognitive enhancing effects of C. lanceolata extract by ultra-high pressure and fermentation process against scopolamine-induced dementia mice was evaluated. The neuroprotective effect of C. lanceolata extract against glutamate induced oxidative stress in HT22 cells was also evaluated. HPFC (C. lanceolata extract by ultra-high pressure and fermentation) increased significant cognitive enhancing effect more than original C. lanceolata in Morris water maze and passive avoidance test. Moreover, HPFC showed protective effect against glutamate induced cytotoxicity on HT22 cells. As results, the memory ameliorating effect of C. lanceolata was improved by ultra-high pressure and fermentation process.
