Abstract

This review provides a brief account of the methodology used for the synthesis of bowl-shaped aromatic compounds, illustrated by recent literature examples. Special attention is given to the latest developments such as surface-catalyzed cyclodehydrogenations, alumina-mediated ring closures, and the fold-in approach.

    • The term ‘molecular bowl’ has been freely used to describe several classes of organic compounds, including such systems as calixarenes or cyclotriveratrylenes. The present account focuses on systems characterized by extensive ring fusion and considerable out-of-plane distortion. For recent reviews, see:

  • 17 The trivial name proposed for the ring system in 31 reflects its resemblance to a jellyfish, and the yellow color of the compound. Chrysaora is a genus of jellyfish from the Pelagiidae family. The genus was named after Chrysaor, Medusa’s son (Χρυσάωρ, ‘golden armament’). See: Péron F, Lesueur CA. Ann. Mus. Hist. Nat. 1809; 14: 325
