Abstract

Objectives: Based on new research on alcohol treatment there is an upcoming debate if reduction or moderation of alcohol use can be as abstinence an adequate goal in the treatment of alcohol use disorders. The question is the future role of reduction of alcohol intake in the interactive treatment planning.

Methods: The status of different treatment goals and the reduction of substance use will be followed in the international and national specialised discussion starting in the 80th of the last century. In the focus are official guidelines and standards representing the established procedures.

Results: Up to now the reduction in use and effects is only in special areas of treatment of alcohol use disorders established as adequate goal. Reasons for delayed implementation of reduction in use especially in Germany are discussed.
