Abstract

The healing effect of the leech therapy has been known for a long time and has been applied for more than 2000 years in the most important traditional medical systems of the world. After having vanished nearly completely during the last two centuries in Europe, the leeches become increasingly important in modern times. Arthroses and local chronic pain syndromes of the locomotor apparatus are the most frequent indications for the leech therapy. The article explains the possible applications and presents a case from practice concerning rizarthrosis.
