Probiotika haben Eingang in die Zahnheilkunde gefunden. Trotz des schnell anwachsenden Wissens über Wirt-Pathogen-Wechselwirkungen sind noch viele Fragen zu den die parodontale Gesundheit fördernden Bakterien unbeantwortet. Zukünftige Forschungsvorhaben mit wohl geplanten Studien zur Effizienz von Probiotika sollten daher sowohl auf die die Mundgesundheit fördernde Mikroflora gerichtet sein, als auch auf immunmodulatorische Wechselwirkungen, die zusammen parodontale Gesundheit mit klinischem Erfolg belegen.
