ESGE research

Addressing the key unanswered questions in GI Endoscopy

Zoom Image
Professor Colin Rees, ESGE Research Committee Chair

Globally there is an ever increasing amount of GI endoscopy research being conducted with the aim of expanding our understanding of disease, diagnosis and the role of technological advances. High numbers of studies taking place simultaneously, often with overlapping research areas, can make it difficult to gain a clear perspective on the most pressing, but as yet unaddressed research questions. Knowledge gaps can develop and without a coordinated approach they can be challenging to identify and prioritize. The ESGE should play a key role in leading and guiding endoscopy research and in advising those providing resources as to the most important areas to prioritise.

Given this background the ESGE research committee have sought to collate and summarise the key unanswered research questions within the field of GI endoscopy in order to better inform and guide future research objectives. In doing so, it is hoped that the rate of endoscopy research will be enhanced, funders informed and investigators able to prioritise research. The distribution of a short online based survey to ESGE members is scheduled for mid-August. This survey will seek input on ranking of the research priorities. The ESGE research committee envisage that the results of this survey will help to further refine the current priorities and we hope for a high response rate. As a small token of gratitude, all survey respondents will be entered into a draw to win an Apple iPad.
