Abstract

Background: The effect of disturbed sleep on the sensation of pain, regeneration and well-being is often neglected by medical staff as well as patients.

Objective: This article illustrates that different clinical patterns associated with sleep can be treated in physiotherapy.

Method: Three different typical case studies with the following diagnoses are described: (1) headache due to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, (2) insomnia and (3) chronic pain syndrome and disorder of the sleep-wake schedule. The examples show the benefits of physiotherapeutic practice.

Results: Physiotherapeutic treatments resulted in health improvements (more restorative sleep, improved breathing during sleep, better well-being, pain reduction) in all 3 patients.

Conclusion: For effective sleep and reduced complaints (pain, fatigue) individual solutions must be offered.
