Background and introduction:

Though factor concentrates are being supplied increasingly at government hospitals, yet the distribution is erratic and patchy across the country. The present study is based upon our previous experiences and explores the utility of homeopathic remedies along with non factor managements in arresting the acute bleeding episodes in severe hemophilia patients, which have little access to factor concentrates.

Objective:

To evaluate the efficacy of homeopathic remedies in the management of acute bleeding episodes in PWH.

Materials and methods:

Severe hemophilia patients (PWH) of various types having acute bleeding episodes with sparse access to factor concentrates and who continued to bleed or remained symptomatic for at least 6 hours after all measures (RICE, Tranexamic acid, FEIBA or novoseven, local pressure etc.) had failed to arrest the bleeding or the symptoms, were included in the analysis of this multicenter report.

Results:

Of 494 severely affected PWH from Nashik (292), Mumbai (182) and Surat (20), with known 636 episodes of bleeding and 578 bleeding episodes (91%) were successfully managed solely using homeopathic remedies. In 21 episodes (3.1%) the homeopathic remedies used, failed but responded to additional factor concentrates. 37 patients who received factor concentrates were without any apparent benefit in the given time.

Conclusion:

Homeopathic remedies can significantly reduce bleeding and improve symptoms in a large majoriy of PWH with non factor supportive therapy and can be used as an alternative therapy where factor concentrates are not always available.
