Eustachian Tube Dysfunction in 2 patients with localized Amyloidosis of the Nasopharynx and Eustachian Tube
Introduction:
Few cases of localized amyloidosis of the upper aerodigestive tract have been reported in literature.
Case presentation:
We present two cases of dilatory Eustachian tube dysfunction caused by localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis.
Management and Outcome:
Diagnostic biopsies confirmed AL-amyloidosis of the Nasopharynx and Eustachian Tube protuberance. Both patients had undergone earlier treatments with grommets. Balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube was performed. The symptoms recurred in long-term follow-up.
Conclusion:
Localised nasopharyngeal amyloidosis can be a rare cause of refractory Eustachian tube dysfunction and middle ear effusion. Histopathology has to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options include grommets and balloon dilation for symptom control.
