Objective:

Standards in maxillofacial 3D diagnostics and further reductions of the resulting dose through technological updates.

Methodology:

Use of the digital volume tomograph SCS MedSeries H23 with multiplanar reconstruction planes, high-resolution detector and pulsed X-ray source in various indications in the ear, nose and throat area.

Results:

High-resolution 3D imaging with multiplanar reconstruction levels as standard in ENT, an achievable dose in the range of daily terrestrial radiation exposure by ultra low dose protocols and 120 kV radiation source allows a significantly improved X-ray diagnostic in the head area with reduced radiation exposure for the patient.

Discussion:

3D imaging with its multiplanar reconstruction planes, by using a high-resolution detector, a pulsed X-ray source, and the ability to record the entire maxillofacial region in a single image, defines a broad range of indications, notably the entire sinus system, including the anterior skull base and the middle and inner ear structures. The application of ultra low dose protocols resulted in dose levels analogous to the daily terrestrial radiation exposure, which could serve as a standard in ENT diagnostics against the background of an almost artifact-free imaging.
