The dissecting shears by Lotus® (Laparascopic Operation by Torsional UltraSound®; LOTUS) is a device to cut tissue and seal vessels up to a diameter of 2,7 +/- 1,0 mm (Lotus 3). The tool utilizes a torsional vibration mode which means the blade tip vibrates back and forth in a short arc around the waveguide axis. We use the dissecting shears by Lotus® for approximately 10 years.

We started with the dissecting shear by the establishment of the thyroid surgery in our department. The ultrasound dissection made this kind of operation much easier and faster. It can be done nearly without bleeding. Ligatures are almost unnecessary. Secondary haemorrhage is a rarity. We made similar good experience performing neck dissection and laryngectomy. Another indication is the Zenker's diverticulum. This method makes the sealing of the tissue and the vessels solid and easier in contrast to the CO2-Laser.

The dissecting shears by Lotus® makes different operations in our special field much easier and better and it's a good alternative solution in comparison to conventional procedures.
