Preoperative risk stratification of patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma
Aim:
Risk-stratification of patients with primary oropharyngeal carcinomas at the time of treatment recommendation.
Method:
Retrospective analysis of survival of 155 prospectively enrolled patients primarily treated with surgery. Risk-stratification by factors available befor treatment.
Results:
Stratification of patients according to red blood cell count (normal vs. low) and p16-status (positive vs. negative) in a low, intermediate and high risk-group led to a highly significant division of disease free (p = 0.000124) and overall survival (p = 0.000091). These factors showed associations with smoking history and age of patients.
Conclusion:
Risk-stratification using these two factors might help to identify patients who least benefit from Primary surgical treatment.
