Introduction:

The goals of a cochlearimplantion are stable electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve and maintenance of residual hearing. It is believed that both can be adversely affected by tissue growth around the electrode. Intracochlear damage and the entry point of the electrode may be responsible for this tissue growth.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of freshly drawn venous blood used as a sealant versus the standard soft tissue seal.

Methods:

We compared two groups of cochlearimplant patients, all of whom were implanted via a round window approach (total n = 30). A group of 15 patients received a seal intraoperatively using freshly drawn venous blood. Our control group of 15 patients was treated as standard with a soft tissue seal without venous blood. The maintenance of residual hearing, the impedance-levels and postoperative clinical course were investigated as outcome.

Results:

Fresh venous blood as material for a seal did not show any negative effects. A significant difference between the two groups has not yet been found.
