Ballon eustachian tuboplasty indication subgroups and specific results

Introduction:

Ballon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) has become an established procedure to treat eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) during the last years. It offers a minimal invasive therapy of EDT with postoperative rates of success at 70% according to the current literature. However a more detailed subgroup analysis of different indications has not been performed to date.

Methods:

We performed a retrospective analysis of 495 patients undergoing BET utilizing a questionaire (ETS 5) before and after intervention. We subdivided the patient population in six groups of indication each with specific ear pathology. The groups contain: 1) patients before tympanoplastic revision, 2) adhesive process, 3) cholesteatoma, 4) middle ear effusion, 5) chronical mesotympanal otitis and 6) normal ear drum.

Results:

In all subgroups ETS-5 shows an improvement of at least 2,2 points one year after treatment. This change was statistically significant.

Conclusion:

The subgroup analysis could show benefit for above mentioned indications. These Indications for BET should be analysed further in randomized prospective studies to gather more data concerning the outcome of BET depending on specific ear pathology.
