Summary
Hemophilia A is reported in a Shetland sheepdog. The history, clotting defects and
clinical course were similar to that seen in human hemophilia. As far as we know,
no evidence of hemophilia has been reported in this breed. Bleeding episodes could
be controlled by fresh frozen plasma given either intravenously or intraperitoneally.
Due to the disability of the dog and his inability to reproduce, he was destroyed.
However, 2 female litter mates remain. We plan to try to establish a colony of these
animals for further study.
