Introduction:

Reprocessing of reusable endoscopes is subject to increasingly strict hygiene requirements. Especially endoscopes with working channel have to pass a validated automatic reprocessing process and are therefore time- and cost-consuming. Alternatively, a single-use system is available on the market. It consists of a single-use endoscope and a portable, reusable monitor with picture and video memory function. Aim of the study was to gain first experiences with that new endoscope-system.

Methods:

Ten consecutive patients with an indication for a rhino-laryngoscopy were examined with the flexible single-use rhino-laryngoscope (Ambu® aScope Rhino-Laryngo Intervention) by 6 different examiners in 18 procedures. After the procedure examiners had to fill out a questionnaire concerning image quality, maneuverability, ergonomics of the handle and overall impression of the system on a 5-point scale (1-very poor, 2-poor, 3-acceptable, 4-good, 5-very good). Furthermore, complications like epistaxis or pain during the procedures were evaluated and examiners could comment on the system in free text.

Results:

Image quality was rated 4,17 ± 0,38 standard deviation (SD), maneuverability was rated 4,67 ± 0,49 SD, ergonomics of the handle was rated 4,44 ± 0,51 SD and the overall impression of the system resulted in 4,33 ± 0,49 SD. During the 18 procedures one mild epistaxis occurred which could be stopped by conservative treatment. Four of the six examiners positively remarked the easy possibility to store pictures and videos on the monitor.

Conclusions:

The flexible single-use rhino-laryngoscope with working channel can be a good alternative to conventional systems. Further studies with more patients and also focusing on the working channel have to follow.
