Background:

Digital development raises the importance of CBAT programs for adult cochlear implantat users. Whereas there exist a lot of training programs for hearing aid users, there is only a small range for CI users. The aim of the present study was to give an overview of the number of German based CBAT programs for postlingually deafened cochlear implanted adults as well as their contents and the proven effectiveness.

Methods:

A systematic search concerning CBAT & CI & study using three databases (pubmed, livivo, google scholar) has been conducted. Besides, CBAT programs in German were searched in google.

Results:

7 English and 1 German articles met the inclusion criteria as well as 2 review articles. All studies showed an improvement of auditive functions after a training of 2 – 4 weeks in total. A follow-up investigation has been undertaken only in 2 cases after 4 weeks. The number of patients included in the studies averaged 12 CI-users (range: 10 – 14). 6 German CBAT programs could be found on google research. There was a wide range with regard to the content, the complexity, the amount as well as the design of the different exercises and the devices used. None of the programs was gender related and adapted to the needs of a specific age group. Half of the German CBAT programs were not free available. None of the mentioned German CBAT programs has been carefully evaluated, whereas some English written programs like LACE have been.

Conclusion:

In order to be able to select the best program for each patient, studies evaluating the effectiveness of the training programs with regard to short as well as long-term and transfer effects have to be undertaken in the future.
